ABSTRACT

The core concepts of leadership are universal, but successful leadership largely depends on culture-specific elements. Different cultures offer varied theories on leadership styles. Beliefs also vary about the qualities that leaders must possess. Based upon the cultural context, the typical leadership style adopted and behavioral patterns depicted, may be regarded as an asset or weakness. In current scenario, there is no cultural comfort zone to be an effective leader. It is quite challenging for a leader to adapt to varied cultural aspects.

Leadership styles have a great influence on team performance. No two cultures view leadership in the same way. Significant research work has been conducted to understand, identify, measure and compare commonly perceived notions of good and effective leadership across the world. This chapter highlights the basic foundations of leadership, common leadership styles and how leadership patterns vary across cultures. General leadership styles adopted by a specific cultural group is also explained. A thorough understanding of how different cultures conceptualize leadership is highly valuable and beyond academic interest. A good grasp of cultural differences is very crucial to organizational efficiency and strong workplace relationships.
