ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors aim to provide an up-to-date summary of and reference source for the effects of smoked marijuana (MJ) on human performance and to determine the relative sensitivity of different behavioral tasks to MJ. Methods used to measure the magnitude of subjective intoxication from MJ varied across studies, but the most common were ratings of “high” or “potency” on a 0 to 10 or 0 to 100 scale. Most studies on the effects of MJ on time perception have used one of two methods — time estimation or time production. While studying the published literature on the effects of MJ on psychomotor/cognitive performance, the authors noted a substantial number of inconsistencies as to which types of behavior are most affected by MJ. In terms of characterizing the MJ use history of the subject population, information should be provided for both frequency of current MJ use as well as an approximation of number of lifetime uses.
