Purification of PNS Factors book
Nerve growth factor (NGF) is the best known example of both a neuronotrophic factors and a Neurite promoting factors. Both polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies have been raised against several species of NGF and careful immunologic assays have been developed to most different NGFs isolated to date. Given the multiplicity of molecular species isolated as NGF molecules and the many different protocols used in their isolation, it might be useful to review the procedures as well as the properties of the different NGF species and the optimal uses for the different NGFs isolated. NGF can also enhance recuperative and regenerative events in the peripheral nervous system. In general, the term NGF is applied to a family of proteins required for the orderly development of vertebrate sensory and sympathetic ganglia. The alpha-NGF subunit is also a mixture of similar polypeptides derived from a single precursor molecule that is held together by disulfide bonds.
