ABSTRACT

Corrosion damage at a part near ground induces lack of strength and fatigue durability of steel columnar structures, like illumination pole. A development of a quick repair work and a corrosion protection of the corroded part can be a key when considering their numbers and narrow objective section to be repaired in their maintenance. The authors have developed a thermosetting epoxy resin and carbon fiber prepreg sheets impregnated the developed epoxy resin. This study proposes a quick strengthening technique of corroded steel pipe using thermosetting biaxial, 2 directional carbon fiber prepreg sheets based mainly on experimental investigations. Site installation test to confirm practicability of the technique revealed that the technique can provide a quick installation of the prepreg sheets. Static loading tests using steel pipe specimens of 165.2 mm in diameter demonstrated that the strengthening effects by the prepreg sheets and revealed that the sheets are effective to restrain buckling of the corroded part of steel columnar structure and to recover their loading capacity.
