ABSTRACT

The wind-resistant safety of derrick cranes in the construction stage of long-span bridges is very important, and there is no clear guidance in the dynamic response calculation. In this paper, a refined wind resistance procedure of a derrick crane attached to long-span bridges during construction was presented. The buffeting analysis of the derrick crane combined structure of Nanjing 5th Yangtze River Bridge in time do-main was completed, and the safety evaluation was carried out therefore. The results show that the safety and comfort of derrick crane can meet the requirements under the working wind speed (13.8 m/s). However, under the limit wind speed (41 m/s), the whole structure will be destroyed. The proposed wind-resistant safety checking procedure can provide guidance and reference for similar structures.
