ABSTRACT

The French recommendations for the prevention of disorders due to delayed ettringite formation (DEF) have been revised. One of the objectives of this revision is to better take into account concretes with supplementary cementitious materials. These guidelines include an appendix to estimate the maximum temperature that could be reached in a massive concrete structure from the knowledge of the mix design of the concrete: dosage and type of cement, dosage and type of addition, effective water dosage. The characteristics of the cement (strength at 2 and 28 days, heat of hydration released after 41h and, if possible after 120h, in the Langavant test) and thickness of the structure are also used. After an explanation of the steps of the method, the method predictions are compared with on-site measurements and synthetic data sets (obtained from calculation).
