ABSTRACT

When a performance-based design for alkali-silica reaction (ASR) is considered, quantitative estimation of expansion is required. For the estimation, some reliable accelerated test methods of clear testing conditions are indispensable. In this paper, based on various limitation of current preventive measures against ASR and relating test methods, a new approach to estimate the expansion behavior is proposed. This approach is composed by two things. One is a reliable concrete prism test (CPT) and the other is numerical estimation based on the expansion mechanism of ASR. Unstable alkali-leaching of current CPT depending on testing condition and materials used can be improved by wrapping concrete by water-holding paper containing alkali solution mimicking the pore solution pH in concrete called as alkali-wrapped CPT (AW-CPT). The details of numerical modeling is presented in another paper.
