ABSTRACT

Shape modified cables lead to aerodynamic phenomena occurring and change of the aerodynamic properties of bridge cables. Modification of the cross-section shape of bridge cables caused by rain-water rivulet and ice/snow-accretion on the cable was investigated. In this study, the modification of cables by the attachment of illumination cables to bridge cables is studied, however, many studies have not been done. Large Eddy Simulation is applied to analyze flow around modified cables by the different size and location of illumination cables. Models in the simulation are verified by numerical simulation and validated by wind tunnel test. Force coefficients of modified cables by illumination cables and wind angles of attack in which galloping instability can occur are presented.
