ABSTRACT

The application of spheroidal graphic cast iron to a bridge deck slab is studied. The cast iron deck have a good live-load durability with little possibility of fatigue crack occurrence. The aim of this study is to investigate the adaptability of the deck, which can be employed for re-placing it with aging concrete floor slab, focusing on the joint structure of deck slab panels and durability of pavement on panel joints. The joint structure of the panels is made based on the assumptions that the principal and the intermediate ribs are only connected to each other with high strength bolts without fixing the deck plate. The FEM analysis was carried out to evaluate the effect to pavement. As a result, the maximum tensile strain of pavement is lower than the critical tensile strain and the influence on pavement can be sufficiently small.
