ABSTRACT

In Japan, local heavy rains and typhoons have caused serious damages. However, rational design methodology against flood is not sufficiently discussed. The authors summarized damage mechanism of bridges based on recent cases to find requirements for developing design method in the future. As a result, we could categorize it into 3 types and regard scour as most important phenomenon to be assessed. Through the comparison of scour depth prediction equations, it revealed that existing equations varies widely. And from case study on stability assessment of a typical bridge pier, we found accurate evaluation of various factors which influence on scour depth is needed.
