ABSTRACT

During the service life of bridge structure, the durability degradation caused by chloride ingress is significant. Considering the material variation of concrete, the cross-section model is built with cellular automata method. Due to the usage of deicing salt, about 5% of reinforcement can be corroded after 30-year service time. To ensure the structural safety, two potential improvements on maintenance method are simulated and the corresponding effect are discussed in detail. Based on the results, the 20-year development time for chloride-free deicing salt is critical to ensure no more than 5% reinforcement corrosion throughout the bridge service life.
