ABSTRACT

Based on the existing research and the current development status of weathering steel bridge materials in China mainland, this paper summarized key points of the design of weathering steel bridges from the limitation on use, corrosion allowance and structural details. The design methods and suggestions of weathering steel bridges were sorted out. Based on the above results, the first two uncoated weathering steel bridges in China mainland — Chang-xing No.2 Bridge and Huang-yan Freeway Overline Bridge were designed and built. The high-performance weathering steel Q500qDNH and Q345qDNH made in China mainland were used in bridges without coating. The service conditions of two bridges were introduced and the applicability of the results in the cases was also studied. The purpose of this paper is to provide theoretical analysis basis and design suggestions for promoting the application of weathering steel bridges.
