ABSTRACT

The uncertainties associated with the probabilistic seismic demand model (PSDM) can be reduced by selecting a suitable intensity measure (IM). The IM selection process involves the consideration of multiple criteria and structural components. However, the integrated performance considering multiple criteria and structural components is seldom assessed in previous studies. To address these issues, this paper proposes a seismic IM selection approach using a multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) approach. The proposed approach is applied to the IM selection for a class of bridges. A decision matrix consisting of the criterion values for all the alternatives is formulated. Considering the uncertainties associated with the earthquake, the probabilistic weighting factors for the components are quantified by component conditional failure probability. The rank of the IMs is obtained using the proposed MCDM model. The effects of IMs on seismic risk is investigated, and the results highlight the importance of IM selection.
