ABSTRACT

The greatest of all United Nations entities, the World Health Organization (WHO), which views disease and health with a global perspective, has somehow misplaced amebiasis. WHO has such a myriad of other infectious diseases units (both intramural and extramural) including communicable diseases, parasitic diseases, malaria, and the Programme for Vaccine Development that amebiasis becomes a paradigm of the expression “to fall between the cracks”. Invasive amebiasis is a major problem in many parts of the world including West and Southeast Africa, Southeast Asia, Western South America, and Mexico. Mexican scientists have made major contributions in every aspect of amebiasis including parasitology, epidemiology, pathology, clinical medicine, treatment, and control. They are in the forefront on the most modern areas of science including cell biology, molecular biology, immunology, and biochemistry.
