ABSTRACT
In 1960 an outbreak of acute liver disease (“Turkey X disease”) occurred among poultry in the U.K. and some 100,000 birds died. The cause was traced to particular shipments of imported groundnut meal used in the manufacture of poultry feed and eventually the specific liver poison was shown to be a fungal metabolite, which became known as aflatoxin.
