ABSTRACT

Evolution is a dynamical process, which shapes the genomes of viruses and their hosts. We present patterns in mutations and reassortments, selection and pathogenesis, in the context of type-A (H1N1) influenza pandemic strain. The 1918–1919 flu pandemic killed more people than World War I. It was the most devastating epidemic in recorded world history. Known as Spanish Flu or La Grippe, the 1918–1919 flu was a global disaster. Why was it so virulent? Since 1918 and, with the discovery of the causative agent, the flu virus, a great deal of research was done to explain why it was so virulent. Could a new flu pandemic happen soon? Huge gaps exist in people knowledge and careful plans should be made to deal with a new flu pandemic, which could happen soon, within the context of an international net.
