ABSTRACT

I have been teaching architectural structure for more than 20 years at the Korea National University of Arts, Korea. Most students are expected to be an architectural designer. But architectural structure is a troublesome subject for them. To relieve this nightmare, it is absolutely necessary for them to approach the subject not mathematically, but visually. There is an old saying, “One picture is worth a thousand words (百聞不如一見).” In my opinion, I would like to add some more to this proverb, “Practice is worth a thousand pictures (百見不如一作).” In conclusion, an exercise in making a model oneself is most important for beginners. I will show one example of how interesting the subject of architectural structure is.
