ABSTRACT

The use of photovoltaic (PV) systems mounted on buildings is growing considerably in China. These operate at high voltages with the potential to cause or promote fires. However, assessment research is lacking on the fire risk of PV systems to buildings. In this article, we present three main sections about PV buildings: fire behavior testing, the fire protection of buildings, and fire suppression measurements. Mainly we focus on the development to current standards of the fire classification rating testing of PV modules and basic fire-protection requirements as well as extinguishment. We also discuss the potential safety hazards and associated problems. Finally, we propose steps to mitigate the fire risk of PV systems installed on buildings.
