ABSTRACT

This study presents an extension of the Risk Situation Awareness Provision (RiskSOAP) indicator to allow the incorporation of fuzzy safety requirements. RiskSOAP is a comparison-based indicator that expresses to what extent a system, based on its design and the state of its components during operation, understands the presence of threats and vulnerabilities. The proposed extension utilizes fuzzy linguistic variables to translate real world system data to design vectors with values of [0, 1], diverging from the crisp values used by the original RiskSOAP methodology. Euclidean distance is then used to replace the dissimilarity between the ideal and the real design vectors. The proposed fuzzy RiskSOAP indicator was applied to a case study of a typical railway crossing and its results were compared against the results of the crisp RiskSOAP indicator applied on the same system.
