ABSTRACT

Fire hazards from the leaking of petroleum are a frequent occurrence in the petrochemical industry and cause great harm to industrial and residential settings. A spill fire experimental platform was designed and constructed aimed at reducing the fire hazards from leaks during the storage and transportation of liquid fuel. With both experimentation and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) calculation methods, the spill fire property of gasoline on a 3° slope was studied. The mechanism of the fire development properties, thermal radiation intensity and the temperature field, etc., were analyzed and obtained. Results indicate that for the temperature testing point with a height of less than 1 m, the experimental results showed a agreement with the CFD calculation. For the points above 1 m, certain differences exist between the results of the two methods, because the wind velocity setting in the CFD calculation cannot totally agree with the field data. In addition, the thermal radiation field was obtained using the CFD calculation. Generally speaking, the error between the experimental results and CFD calculation remained in an acceptable range.
