ABSTRACT

Tornado is one of the most serious meteorological disasters and causes large damage within a short time. In this study, we investigated the level of damage in houses caused by the 2016 tornado in Funing, Jiangsu Province, China. Then we analyzed the correlation among the damage levels and other factors such as the strength of tornado, the height and area of the damaged houses, and the building structure by using the multinomial logistic regression model. We found that in the scale of a town, the damage level caused by tornado did not relate strongly to the intensity of the tornado hazard. Our findings demonstrated the correlations among the hazard consequences, the height, and the area of houses: in general, the taller and bigger (area) a house is, the worse damage it will suffer. We hope this study will help the reduction of loss caused by meteorological disaster like tornado.
