ABSTRACT

Game analytics is a rapidly growing and increasingly important quantitative element of game development in which player and play data is analyzed to discover actionable information that could guide monetization and future development activities. Game analytics started at first with a single, simple metric, downloads. While providing a basic number yielding some indication of player base, this metric on its own is of limited usefulness. Over time, more robust sets of metrics were employed to measure players and their play, such as the pirate metrics. In order to provide proper computational linguistic analysis of the textual artifacts, methods from the fields of text normalization, social media linguistic analysis, text mining, and information retrieval are needed. The nature of the information and data frequently encountered in the gaming space is a newer type of linguistic structure, one that has developed and has to be thoroughly analyzed: social media.
