ABSTRACT

This paper presents part of an investigation into the preservation of cultural heritage and active ageing. The tangible and intangible heritage related to handicraft textiles, which use a diverse set of fibers of plant and animal origin, is a good that must be preserved in Portugal, due to its diversity as a cultural value and importance for local development. In a country with a growing elderly population, the empirical knowledge that this age group has can be valued through senior universities. This research analyzes a set of US that are located in areas of low density near the Tagus River. In the concrete case of handmade textiles, there are already some examples of their teaching/learning to be done within some classes of these Senior Universities.
