ABSTRACT

Textile materials, used mainly in the fashion industry, have characteristics and a performance that may be used in certain fields of architecture. We propose a research line to develop construction techniques that use textile material as a promor of buildings’ thermal comfort. The application of digital tools in architecture makes possible to develop building solutions based on dynamic textile surfaces, linking design and construction phases. These adaptive, reactive, and kinetics textile surfaces present geometric variation, throughout the day and throughout the year. Digital tools allow us to control and and design the shape adaptation to sun exposure, therefore, improving energy efficiency as a result of the implementation of these mechanisms. Theses surfaces are supported by lightweight structures, thus avoiding the internal work bending moment, or at least, their value is reduced.
