ABSTRACT

Facial growth in children with cleft lip and palate is an important outcome measure. This chapter was undertaken to assess craniofacial development of patients with repaired unilateral cleft lip and palate treated by the cleft lip and palate (CLP) Team in Oslo and compare with published data. No patients within the study received either presurgical orthopaedics or orthodontic treatment in the deciduous dentition. All patients underwent staged primary repair with initial lip and anterior palate repair with a superiorly based single layer vomer flap in infancy and subsequent posterior cleft palate repair in early childhood. The cephalograms were digitised using standardised bony and soft tissue landmarks and reference planes. All radiographs were digitised twice at the same sitting by the author who was the head of the dental unit attached to the Oslo CLP Team. The skeletal and soft tissue features were characterised by a short and retrusive maxilla, vertical elongation of the anterior face, and a retrusive mandible.
