ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a review of both the treatment methods and clinical results from 15 years use of osseointegrated implants supporting a removable bridge for the rehabilitation of edentulous jaws. The review of the treatment methods was a relevant part of the study, as between 1965 and 1971 changes in the clinical procedures were frequently made. Indications for treatment were an edentulous state for more than 1 year with insufficient retention for a denture; the patient's inability to accept a denture, or functional disturbances. A total of 371 edentulous patients were treated between 1965 and 1980. In these patients, 2,768 implants were placed. The anchorage function was calculated for the total number of included implants and defined as the ratio between the number of the stable, osseointegrated implants supporting a bridge, in relation to the total number of installed implants.
