ABSTRACT

Necrotizing enterocolitis is a disease that is defined in part based on specific characteristics that are identified using imaging techniques. For instance, the presence of free intraperitoneal air, pneumatosis intestinalis, portal venous air, and intestinal obstruction all require accurate imaging modalities. This chapter will review the benefits of each of the current imaging modalities for the diagnosis and treatment of NEC in neonates, will highlight emerging modalities, and will guide clinical selection of individual tests.
