ABSTRACT

Char coming from gasification of biomasses was mixed with red clay to create both lightweight aggregates (LWAs) for green roofs applications and bricks and with polyoils and other reactants to obtain polyurethane panels for insulating purpose. Application in LWAs by substituting the clay with char leads to a weight-lightening of the material. To optimize LWAs pH, spent coffee grounds (SCG) were added. A greater decrease in weight and pH values in the neutrality range were observed. Adding biochar on bricks led to a significant reduction of materials bulk density (from 2 to 1.5g/cm3). Polyurethane panels show a decrease of thermal conductivity by increasing the content of char. The addition of char increases the maximum applicable load related to stress relaxation tests and improves the recovery of the load after 10 minutes. Higher elastic modulus values are seen after compressive tests. Electrical conductivity increases in samples containing char.
