ABSTRACT

Waste recycling is part of the circular economy concept that goes from the redesign of processes, products, business models with resource efficiency. Bituminous mixtures were developed with paper and pulp industry wastes (dregs and grits). These mixtures will be used as a surface course in a pilot large-scale demonstrator of an on-going European Circular Economy project (Paperchain). To scale up from laboratory to the industrial level, mix designs were designed, tested, technical and legal constraints were assessed in order to carry on the pilot test. This paper discusses relevant results so that the pilot test can be carried out with success in an environmentally safe way. Results show mix designs that have the possibility to be scaled up with success, using dregs and grits as alternative raw materials of natural filler and fine aggregates present in traditional bituminous mixtures for road construction.
