ABSTRACT

The study presented in this work comprises the alkaline activation of a slag, to be used as a binder for soil stabilization with the Deep Mixing Method. Activation of these materials is commonly made with Sodium Silicate (SS) and Sodium Hydroxide (SH). The SS provides immediate soluble silica, essential for the formation of the binding gel, which is responsible for the mechanical strength of these materials, but it is a very expensive material. Activation with SH alone is relevant, even if it does not generate the mechanical strength that a combination of SS and SH can achieve, it can still satisfy the current soil improvement requirements. For this purpose, a statistical analysis was performed, using the Design of Experiments (DoE) and 11 mixtures were tested to determine the optimum mixture in terms of mechanical behavior, which was evaluated the dates of compression strength tests with a response surface design.
