ABSTRACT

In recent decades there has been an exponential increase in the use of classroom video as a tool to improve teacher skills, in all subject areas, at all grade levels, and all over the world. This chapter provides an overview of the project ‘Towards Responsive Professional Development for Singapore Music Teachers. Phase 2: Developing Video-Based Learning Resources’. The Singapore Teachers’ Academy for the Arts (STAR) and the National Institute of Education (NIE) have partnered to develop a repository of classroom videos intended to foster the professional development of Singapore’s school music teachers. First, the team coded 211 video-recorded full lessons, conducted mainly by regular music teachers. Subsequently, we produced a collection of video clips that illustrate ways in which Singapore’s music syllabus can be taught and/or how student-centric principles can be enacted in the classroom. Finally, we collected a wealth of empirical data (using surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions) to examine music teachers’ perceptions of the usefulness of the video-based learning resources developed. The videos are currently being used in online and blended professional development (PD) courses delivered by STAR.
