ABSTRACT

Audiovisual and games media are effective educational learning tools for improving information retention among students. The purpose of this study is to determine the best tool for improving the mastery of English vocabulary between audiovisual and game media. The research was quasi-experimental and utilized a randomized pretest and post-test comparison group design. The population involved two fifth grade classes at Manahan Surakarta Elementary School. The Fifth Grade A was made Experimental Group 1 (EG1) with 33 students, while Fifth Grade B became Experimental Group 2 (EG2) with 28 students. Also, cluster random sampling technique was utilized in this experiment. Data from the post-test results show that EG1 used with audiovisual performed better than EG2 using games. The study concludes that audiovisual media is a valuable learning tool for students’ vocabulary retention in foreign language classes.
