ABSTRACT

The “area” identifies a particular zone of a plant which contains systems or components that are relevant to safety and to health protection, in which the effects following the hypothesized incidental events can be circumscripted. Among the area events, the accidental release of toxic gases is to be quoted, since it could cause injuries to operating personnel or prevent the entrance to important areas, with possible loss of plant control. The maximum flooding level should take into consideration potential sources of liquids located in each area. In the design of nuclear power plants it has become a common practice to divide the plant into flooding areas capable of preventing the spread of water to other areas. Gas storage tanks and receiving areas shall be isolated from other equipment. Gas containers shall have adequate design margins and shall be equipped with reliable relief devices.
