ABSTRACT

The most significant step to minimize the risk of accidents in the industry, laboratory and/or company is the design of a sustainable eco-friendly process. These accidents include risks of fire, explosions and emissions to the environment caused by chemical reagents, liquids, gases and halogenated substances. To achieve balance between accident prevention and pollution control the procedures for obtaining a product must be modified or discarded to use different types of materials, with the purpose of decreasing a wide range of risks on chemical substances, processes and to consider avoiding contamination in its diverse ways. This chapter shows strategies for prevention of accidents as well to apply the approach in 12 different areas such as the health, food, automotive and textile industries. Environmental risk index is used to assess risks for using reagents, raw materials and during their handling, besides inspecting in general the process route.
