ABSTRACT

The Latin American and Caribbean Geopark Network (GeoLAC) was founded in May 2017 with the participation of four UNESCO Global Geoparks: Araripe (Brazil), Grutas el Palacio (Uruguay), and Comarca Minera and Mixteca Alta (both in Mexico).

GeoLAC shares the objectives of other regional networks as well as those of the Global Geoparks Network, namely “to conserve and enhance the value of areas of geological significance in Earth history, including landscapes and geological formations, which are key witnesses to the evolution of our planet and determinants for our future, and to promote sustainable development for example through geotourism and education” (GGN, 2018).Geotourism is the main activity promoting the economy of Latin American geoparks, which focuses on a cultural and educational perspective for all audiences.

Latin American geoparks, both those recognized by UNESCO and others in development, maintain close collaboration through joint geotourism activities.

Geotourism displays a growing dynamism and acceptance in various Latin American territories, although with striking differences in their development. Latin American Geoparks are contrasting territories, some with a long tourism tradition, extensive infrastructure while others are socially and economically marginalized.
