ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a survey of selected emerging methods for patient ergonomics. These methods, including qualitative methods, virtual and augmented reality, Internet of Things and sensors, and gamification, can improve patient work or facilitate relevant research. We provide not only a brief introduction to the methods but also examples of using them for patient work. Afterward, we detail a case of an important type of patient work, food consumption, from the lens of Human-Food Interaction to demonstrate the use of the emerging methods. Although patient ergonomics can benefit from traditional methods, unique characteristics of patient ergonomics (in terms of settings, goals, etc.) make the use of novel methods necessary to support data collection and intervention delivery.
