ABSTRACT

The manufacturing sector has continuously evolved from traditional manufacturing towards an integrated model with advanced processes and technologies that includes advanced manufacturing technologies (AMT) like group technologies, flexible manufacturing system (FMS), industrial robots, computer-integrated manufacturing systems and sustainable manufacturing. However, the manufacturing sector still remains a complex system that requires the use of data analysis techniques to measure its performance. Data envelopment analysis (DEA), a mathematical optimization technique, is applied for selecting the best plant layout, evaluating the most effective FMS and AMT, identifying the most sustainable manufacturing system, finding the energy efficient manufacturing unit, and investigating the profitability and marketability of manufacturing organizations. Hence, the chapter extends to present the review of published works showing diverse application of DEA in the manufacturing sector. The DEA technique is explicitly explained, ranging from conventional models to advanced models. Through the wide-ranging review of literatures, the chapter concludes to present future directions in upcoming fields in manufacturing sector using advanced models of DEA. The studies are thoroughly scrutinized to state the future directions of research.
