ABSTRACT

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between personal attitude as reflected by level of greed and individual background based on parental influence on adolescent financial behavior, with financial knowledge and financial attitude as mediating variables. This study used a quantitative approache and data were obtained by distributing questionnaires to 240 high school students in Padang City. The results show that financial behavior of adolescents is mainly influenced by parents. In addition, it can be concluded that parents have weak role in the development of financial knowledge and attitude. Adolescents in Padang City are strongly dependent on parents for financial decisions and greed is not reflected in their behavior. Implication of this research should be the concern of stakeholders such as financial institutions, because financial personality traits and behavior during adolescence will last until adulthood and will also affect a person’s financial decisions over the rest of his or her life.
