ABSTRACT

Electricity is a major energy carrier in the world and its use is expected to increase, while climate change drives increasingly renewable-based electricity to replace fossil fuels in many applications. While a transition to renewables in the long run is much needed, short to medium term strategies need to enable cleaner coal-based electricity generation through realistic assessments of the deployment of pollution abatement technologies. Consequently, while coal-based power generation is providing energy security to India; it has several environmental and human health impacts, including outdoor air pollution. Exposure to air pollution is linked to many health effects that vary with pollutant concentration. Air pollution has led to over 2,750 cases of deaths or severe illnesses per lakh people in 2016. Reducing air pollution from the power sector will require installing emission control systems coupled with technological advancements in coal power generation in order to reduce emissions.
