ABSTRACT

This chapter results from the author’s presentation as a keynote speaker at the International Conference: Matters of Research in Architecture at the University of Liège on the 27th of May 2016.

The aim is to contribute to a broader reflection about the introduction of research behavior (reflection in designing and the production of new knowledge) in schools of architecture’s educational curricula. We know today that the first turning point in architecture education was made between the two World Wars, at the schools of Bauhaus (in Germany) and Vikutema (in the ex-URSS), and the second was made with the Bologna reform or “Bologna Process” with the creation of the “European Higher Education Area” under the “Lisbon Recognition Convention.”

The educational project described here is based on the author’s experience as Head of the Department of Architecture, director of an Integrated Master Course in Architecture, and Scientific Coordinator of a Research Centre in a private University in Portugal.
