ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the environmental threats caused by ICT. It discusses the basics of sustainable computing in terms of environmental issues. The chapter suggests actions should be followed by organizations to achieve sustainable computing. It discusses different computing approaches for achieving sustainable computing. The chapter suggests that the role of smartphone crowd computing in sustainable computing. An environmental externality is typically implied as a negative externality that is common for any industry in the context of environmental economics. The concept of sustainable computing considers the total ownership cost, environmental impact, and the benefits of the technology. Green computing, a notation of sustainable computing, has a goal of minimizing the use of hazardous materials, maximizing energy efficiency during the product’s lifetime, and improving the recyclability of the product and the factory waste.
