ABSTRACT

The design of drug delivery systems is regarded as one of the most advancing fields in which chemical engineers and chemists contribute to human health care. Biodegradable polymers are generally used in the production of drug transport systems, as they exhibit decreased levels of toxicity and side effects besides targeted release. In immediate drug release systems, the drug molecules break down fast and are dissolved in the dissolution media. Pulsatile drug release systems are developed to deliver the drug at the right time, at the right site of action, and in the right amount. A modified drug release system is a combination of immediate drug release, delayed drug release, and extended drug release systems. Through modified drug release, drug doses are delivered with a delay after administration, or for a prolonged period of time, or to a specific target in the body.
