ABSTRACT

Chapters 8 and 9 deal with trade and competition. Mainland China and Taiwan represent interesting contrasts in their agricultural trade. Mainland China is a net agricultural exporter while Taiwan is a net importer of agricultural commodities. From the U.S. perspective, both Mainland China and Taiwan have been major customers of U.S. agricultural exports. In l989 (fiscal year ending September 30, 1989), Mainland China imported $ 1,494 million of agricultural goods from the U.S., while the comparable figure for Taiwan was $1,594 million. They ranked, respectively, as the sixth and seventh largest importing countries of U.S. agricultural goods, following Japan, the USSR, Mexico, South Korea, and The Netherlands.
