ABSTRACT

Technological change is generally viewed as a major determinant of structural change. The mechanization of farming as an outgrowth of the industrial revolution has been largely responsible for the dramatic increase in farm size over the last 70 years. A study by the Office of Technology Assessment concludes that "technology and associated economies of size, specialization, and capital requirements have had an important influence on structural change in agriculture" (U.S. Congress, OTA 1986, 117).
