ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the development of notional technology, first defining the concept and then presenting an illustration of how the concept was used in a Farming Systems Research project in the Philippines. It provides the presentation of an example where a notional technology was "invented" and evaluated during the course of a research project undertaken in the Philippines. In 1974, the Cropping Systems Program (CSP) was enlarged to include a multidisciplinary team to undertake research on existing and improved cropping patterns. The CSP chose to focus efforts on rainfed lowland and upland rice areas in South and Southeast Asia. A good measure of the degree of success of cropping systems research carried out in a specific area is the extent to which the recommendations derived from research results are adopted by farmers in the area. The description of Iloilo farming conditions focuses very heavily on the description of crop agroclimate.
