ABSTRACT

This chapter presents information concerning the use of Prostin F2 alpha® as a tool in breeding management programs. Prostin F2 alpha can be used to regress the corpus luteum of estrous cycling mares to predict, or preprogram mares to be in estrus. Prostin F2 alpha can be a valuable asset to breeding management program. With accurate measurement of ovulation, administration of Prostin F2 alpha on days 5 to 6 after ovulation is almost 100% effective. Prostin F2 alpha has been investigated extensively for treatment of clinically anestrous, or difficult to breed, mares. Data presented demonstrated that Prostin F2 alpha is luteolytic in the mare and also that Prostin F2 alpha has applicability to assist in management of reproduction in the mare. Prostin F2 alpha administered to these mares will regress the corpus luteum and a high percentage of the mares will be detected in estrus.
