ABSTRACT

Good stallion management includes a proper nutrition and exercise program tailored to each stallion's needs. The proper training of the stallion for breeding purposes also is necessary to obtain good ejaculates on a routine basis throughout a long breeding season. In addition to proper nutrition, stallions require the proper amount of exercise. Most stallions do well when kept in an open-housing situation, which is a stall with free access to a paddock. Individuality of stallions is an important consideration when determining how a stallion should be handled. Some horses require a great deal of discipline, but over restraint of a young or timid stallion may result in a slow breeder or even a refusal of the animal to mount and ejaculate. Collection of stallion semen can be accomplished most efficiently by use of an artificial vagina. Semen collection requires three people: the mare handler, the stallion handler, and a third person to do the actual collection.
