ABSTRACT

Horses are unique among domestic animals in that their value is increased with training. If a trainer loses his ability to think through either anger or poor control of his temper, he puts himself on the intellectual level of the horse. Regardless of the amount of Knowledge possessed oy a trainer or the athletic ability of the horse, very little learning can take place unless the horse has the proper disposition. Although horse behavior and training sounds like a rather simple topic, it can be very complicated. Horses are unique among domestic animals in that their value is increased with training. The horse is exposed to many experiences during his life that serve as unconditioned stimuli. One of the problems associated with unconditioned stimuli is that many trainers start their program by frightening the horse. There are few primary reinforcers used in horse training.
