ABSTRACT

Optimum feeding of horses is an art. Horses are individualists, as compared to other livestock species; therefore, different horses may need to be managed and fed differently. Group feeding management of older horses needs to take into account "dominance hierarchies." Horses in a group, particularly older horses, will establish a "pecking order" or their dominance hierarchy, as is seen in other species. Regularity in feeding time is essential. Sanitation around the feeding and watering area is mandatory. There are several methods for feeding hay. Some horsemen have reasoned that horses should eat from the ground, because horses in the wild ate that way. Individual feeding is ideal for young horses being prepared for show and performance. Performance horses in training are usually stalled and fed individually. Group feeding of foals will work if done properly. Foals should be started on a creep ration they will eat.
