ABSTRACT

Large-animal veterinarians have applied preventive health programs in the food-animal industry. Each new arrival should receive a physical examination to assess its general health. The horse should be in isolation for approximately 30 days with a final health check before mixing with the other animals on the farm. Horses that are purchased and brought to a new facility have frequently been exposed to respiratory diseases that are contagious and that may be capable of causing abortions. Immunization programs must be designed according to location of the farm and special problems that may be geographic in nature. The chapter discusses some of the diseases of horses and how vaccination programs which can be utilized. A preventive health program combined with attention to nutrition and enteric diseases can go a long way toward maintaining the health and well-being of stud managers' horses.
